CHANDAULI VILLAGE
We visited Chandauli Village in January, 2012. We traveled by jeep for many hours finally reaching this rural area. We then followed a foot path the rest of the way to reach this very remote village. Some of the most impoverished people of North India live here. The parents earn less than a dollar a day when there is work. While we were there, little by little the villagers came to see who the visitors were.
The people in the village have tried to send their children to school but were turned away because they didn't have money for uniforms or books. Since their parents were illiterate, the kids also had no help with homework.
A very basic tutoring center was started in this village to help the kids who were trying to attend government schools. Many of the children and their parents came to the tutoring center to greet us. Some of the youngest kids and their 16 year old tutor showed us what they were learning. They recited the alphabet to us in English.
With the exception of the small shed you see to the back of the picture, there is very little protection from rain or very hot temperatures in the tutoring center. It was winter when we visited (about 50 degrees) so the children were all bundled up. We also noticed there was no electricity in the tutoring center or in the village. They told us that bringing electricity would create good will among the villagers and expand the possibilities for the village community.
After our visit, we asked the leaders in Chandauli to submit a proposal that would build a structure providing shelter and electricity for the 200 children who come to study. We received and approved this proposal and are raising the $16,000 to complete the project. By bringing electricity to the tutoring center, the entire village will also have access to power. This opens the door for a possible computer center and trade center that could teach the boys welding skills. The leaders told us that a well has been dug recently in the tutoring center bringing clean water to the village. It is being pumped manually. Bringing electricity to the village could allow for an electric pump to be used.

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS
Tutoring center building construction in progress - November, 2012. It is replacing the small shed you see in the pictures above.
PROJECT COMPLETION
The building construction was completed in December, 2012. The children can now be tutored regardless of the weather because they have shelter.
What a beautiful sight. Electricity has been brought to Chandauli Village for the very first time. Connecting to electricity was a long, long way from Chandauli.
325 children of the village have registered themselves for tutoring. Tutoring is now conducted every day after school to help the children complete their homework.
